James Spader’s face and body to be used in Ultron design

Since it was announced that James Spader will play the menacing villain Ultron in the next Avengers installment, there’s been much speculation as to whether or not Ultron will be CG or live action. Essentially, Ultron is a robot (originally created by Hank Pym, although the origin story is being adjusted for the film) with a rogue AI that sees humans as a threat. To me, it would seem like they would go CG as opposed to live action. Well it seems like they might be doing a combination of both.

In a recent interview with Huffington Post, Marvel studios head honcho Kevin Feige spoke about utilizing face and body scans of Spader to apply to Ultron.

Well, I think it will be more than a voice role – we’ll be capturing his face and his body to create a whole performance. He’s a very unique and incredibly exciting and unpredictable actor. And Ultron in the comics is a robot, but what’s cool about him in the comics – and certainly how Joss Whedon is interpreting him for the movie – is that he is much more than just a robot. That he’s infused with much character. And I don’t want to say too much, but you can imagine James Spader will be very dynamic in his portrayal of this character.

In another interview with Inquirer, James Spader also talks about the face and body scans, as well as mentioning how he’s going to “fit into this Ultron character.”

I have spoken to Joss Whedon about it. And yes, actually, just this weekend I went in for them to take very extensive photographs, head scans, body scans, and all kinds of things in preparation for figuring out how the hell I’m gonna fit in this Ultron character!

So maybe Ultron will end up looking similar to how RDJ was in the Iron Man armor; a mix between motion capture and a physical suit. Also with the face scans, will Ultron have a sort of humanized endoskeleton underneath the armor shell? Or will he be a sympathetic character in the form of a rogue JARVIS AI? (after all who doesn’t love JARVIS?) I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

As far as Avengers 2 as a whole is concerned, we know that Ultron won’t be created by Pym and there is rumor and speculation that he’ll possibly even be a rogue version of JARVIS. Also it was recently announced that Aaron Taylor-Johnson will be Quicksilver and Elizabeth Olsen will play Scarlet Witch in the upcoming film.

I’m definitely looking forward to this movie, as it’s shaping up to be exponentially bigger than the first Avengers. For now though, you can catch Ultron…I mean James Spader on his new show The Blacklist.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron hits theaters on May 1, 2015.
