PS4 originally bundled with PS4 Eye?

On paper, the PS4 seems like the sweetest deal out of the 2 major consoles hitting shelves. Given the specs between the Xbox One and PS4 are very similar, with only minor details in difference, the Xbox One has the advantage of the Kinect while the PS4 has the price point advantage. Seems like Sony originally wanted to include the PS4 Eye in each console like the Xbox One. The higher ups of Sony, on the other hand, decided against it, citing to keep the loss per unit as low as possible. Seeing as Sony was losing roughly $250 to $300 per PS3 sold, Sony doesn’t want to start this launch so deep in losses. Despite the success the PS3 had, it gave Sony the first posted losses in almost 11 years, a mistake Sony doesn’t want to repeat.

Adam Turner of Businessspecator.com.au recently caught up with Sony Computer Entertainment President and Group CEO Andy House and Senior Vice President Masayasu Ito after the Tokyo Game Show at Sony’s head office in Minato, Tokyo.

While Microsoft’s inclusion of the Kinect grants end users and developers greater freedom, Sony’s Masayasu Ito says US$399 was deemed “the magic price” for the PlayStation 4 – bringing it in US$200 cheaper than the PlayStation 3. Efforts were made to include the camera at the US$399 mark, but pressure from above forbade Sony Computer Entertainment from making too much of a loss on the PlayStation 4 hardware. As it is Sony is rumoured to be losing US$60 on each PlayStation 4 sale, money it aims to make back via selling peripherals, software and services.

A $60 loss per console is much better than almost $300 per console, which can easily be made back with a few game sales and a controller. Given the PS4 Eye is not fully integrated with the PS4 like the Kinect is with the Xbox One, Sony’s decision to not include it is a smart one.

“Certainly for the earlier part of the lifecycle, the vast majority of the audience that we speak to tells us that their primary wish is for the full controller interface and there’s not necessarily a huge emphasis being placed on camera interaction,” House says.

Sony’s presentation at E3 2013 was favored by gamers all over, which saw Sony focus more on games than functionality and features while keeping the price reasonable. With a lower price point than its main rival and the loss per console reduced from last generations, this could be Sony’s climb back to the top spot.ps4 controller
