Xi3’s Piston is NOT a Steam Machine, no Valve support

As much confusion and term-assignment this product has had, it can only be overshadowed by our former president, G.W.Bush. Even good ol’ Dubbaya couldn’t describe exactly what the Piston is or what it is being associated with these days. One main trigger for this confusion is the e-mail sent out by Xi3 today announcing their partnership with ScruffGaming, a peripherals manufacturer specializing in Xbox 360 controllers.

This huge red flag instantly devalues the Piston as a Steam Machine since it doesn’t come with a controller, right? Well while it isn’t a Steam Machine, Xi3 have adapted to the title of Steam Box (a term created by bloggers after CES 2012). A recent press release on the Piston’s status even blames media for the naming confusion.

Xi3 has never described its PISTON Console (PC) as the Steam box or a Steam Box,
especially since it appears that Steam Box is a term created by journalists and not by Valve. To
be clear, however, PISTON Console owners will be able to access and play games on/through
Steam since it is a Web-based platform open to anyone with an Internet connection and a
Steam account, either on a Windows- or a Linux-based system. So in this regard, PISTON
could be considered the first commercially available Steam Box.

So what does this mean for the average consumer looking to get their hands on a shiny new Steam Machine. Simply it means that Valve will have NO DIRECT SUPPORT FOR THE XI3 PISTON.

“Valve did some some exploratory work with Xi3 a couple years back, but currently have no involvement with any Xi3 product or the company,” – Valve Representative (2012).

You’ll have to do everything from installing the Steam OS to making sure none of the under-powered hardware fails to even buying a separate Steam Controller.

As a “Steam Box” (Thanks for completely discrediting the term Xi3) the Piston can of course run Steam, just like any modern computer out there, but with much lower framerates compared to similar machines at that price point, and possible hardware issues which are a pain to fix in micro-format, also without the steam controller. But otherwise it’ll do stuff. I’m pretty sure you can use it for porn.
