Following Samsung’s announcement last Thursday in the OLED display industry for the next generation of smartphones, LG has begun producing plastic-based 6-inch displays just 0.44 millimeters thick and weighing 7.2 grams, making it the world’s lightest OLED display of its size.

The panel uses film-type encapsulation to stop air and moisture from damaging the sensitive OLED materials. LG promises “enhanced performance and differentiated designs” will come with the device.

Sadly, there is no timeline or even a glimmering hope of a sign as to when these screens will be in our hands. The closest thing we have is a confirmation to Reuters that LG will release a device with this OLED screen around November. Interestingly enough, Samsung’s curved phone is actually curved from side to side, rather than top to bottom with a curvature radius of 700mm.

LG has stated that the plastic-based panel is bendable yet unbreakable, although the phone device will still be rigid.

Specs:

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 MSM8974 @ 2.3GHz
  • HD resolution ( 1280 x 720)
  • LTE-Advanced/W-CDMA/GSM
  • Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean
