The Last Guardian gets ‘re-engineered’ for a PS4 release?

The Last Guardian Gameplay - 3

Despite being announced as being on hiatus at E3, Shuhei Yoshida has recently stated in an interview that not only is The Last Guardian in development, but it’s currently being “re-engineered”. He wouldn’t say exactly why or what’s the purpose behind the re-engineering , but it’s possible it’s being re-created for the PS4. Since it was announced in 2009, The Last Guardian has largely been hidden with very little information coming from Team Ico and Sony. In an interview with Rob Fahey, Shuhei Yoshida gave only vague information on the status besides being re-engineered. When asked about the hiatus status, Yoshida replied with this:

“Hiatus, I never… It was Jack Tretton! He used that term, and I said no, hiatus is misleading. It was a hiatus in terms of releasing new information. The game has never stopped – the team has always been here. They’re going through the re-engineering of the game, so the team size is smaller, because it’s more engineering focused right now.”

When Rob Fahey asked about it possibly being a PS4 title, Yoshida replied with this:

So, we’re waiting for the right time to re-introduce The Last Guardian in an appropriate way. I can’t… Well, the game is in development, and it’s well staffed, and Ueda-san is here, working – even though he’s not a Sony employee, he’s dedicated to the product. But we’re not ready to update yet.

The hints are subtle, but they are there. Sony wants to reintroduce the game sometime in the near future, and with the re-engineering being done, it’s possible that The Last Guardian could very well be a PS4 title. Depending on the stage of development, it’s safe to say we probably won’t hear from Sony or Team Ico about The Last Guardian in E3 2014. With Ico and Shadow of the Colossus re-release on the PS3, many gamers are eager for the next installment from Team Ico, though now we have to wait much longer than previously thought.
