James Spader is Ultron in The Avengers: Age of Ultron

James Spader plays titular villain in The Avengers: Age of Ultron

Great news coming from the Marvel camp today as it has been announced that Stargate star James Spader has been announced to play Ultron in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron. Whether Spader is set to do the mo-cap remains to be seen, but Spader’s unique voice would be great for the psychotic AI. If you don’t believe listen to the video below, and imagine that robotic audio effects added to it. Note the way that he delivers his lines and the beat in between, I think this is a really great choice for Marvel.

For weeks, it’s been speculated that Ultron would be played Paul Bettany. We recently reported a rumor that Bettany is negotiating a new contract to return as J.A.R.V.I.S. and possibly Ultron. If you think that this puts the rumors to rest that a corrupt J.A.R.V.I.S. is going to eventually turn into Ultron, don’t think that just yet. A possible outcome could be that J.A.R.V.I.S. could be split into a good and evil AI, hence a possibility of differing voices.

I personally am not a fan of J.A.R.V.I.S. going rogue storyline. I’d rather have iMDB’s fake storyline about the US government building Ultron as a big [email protected]# you to the Avengers as a way to protect humanity from “freaks” like them. When Ultron goes rogue (possibly from Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver’s doing?), it’s up to the Avengers to come in and save the day.

Whatever the case for the story is, “In Joss We Trust” and I trust that man to make a great film regardless of all the naysayers (see: comic book purists) out there.

Here is the official press release from Marvel:

James Spader will face off against Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as the villain in Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” the sequel to 2012’s record-breaking “Marvel’s The Avengers.” The Emmy Award-winning actor will play Ultron in the Avengers’ much anticipated return to the big screen from writer/director Joss Whedon. The film comes to theaters on May 1, 2015.

Spader earned three Emmy Awards for his role as Alan Shore on “Boston Legal” and “The Practice,” and will return to television this fall in NBC’s highly anticipated series “The Blacklist.” Most recently Spader was seen in the critically-acclaimed film “Lincoln” directed by Steven Spielberg and has previously worked with a long list of accomplished film directors including David Cronenberg, Curtis Hansen, Sidney Lumet, Mike Nichols, Tim Robbins, Robert Rodriguez, Steven Soderbergh, and Oliver Stone.  David Mamet also directed Spader in the Broadway play Race.

“Avengers: Age of Ultron” will bring the Marvel Universe’s biggest heroes together again to face one of their biggest villains, with “Marvel’s The Avengers” director Joss Whedon returning to write and direct the sequel. “Marvel’s The Avengers” was released in 2012 and went on to earn $1.5 billion worldwide, making it the third-largest grossing movie of all time.

Spader is represented by ICM Partners and his lawyer Melanie Cook at Ziffren Brittenham.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron is set to be released on May 1st, 2015.
