Diablo III: Reaper of Souls announced

D3 Reaper of SoulsComing straight out of Gamescom, Blizzard announced the first expansion to their best-selling demon slaughtering game Diablo III, titled Reaper of Souls. And apparently this is the part where shit really does go down.

The events of the expansion follow almost immediately after the end of Act IV. Tyrael, still rocking his mortal form, decides to hide the black soulstone, still teeming with the essence of Diablo and the other evils, in a place where no one can ever find it. Unfortunately, the former Angel of Wisdom, Malthael, now the Angel of Death (apparently they get better job benefits), decides not even five seconds after the soulstone is set in place to take it for his own machinations. A new trailer portraying the chain of events, which looks awesome as always, can be seen below.

Players will be able to go through Act V, which places them in the streets of Westmarch to fight off Malthael’s horde of loot-filled baddies, and onward to Pandemonium Fortress. The new areas look comparatively darker, grittier, and more gothic inspired than in the original game, likely as a result of Malthael’s influence, and the complaints from the incredibly picky fanbase. The level cap will also be raised to 70, and there will be adjustments to loot drops, including the addition of “smart drops” which increases the likelihood of an item dropping that has stats tuned for your class.

Along with the original classes, there will also be a new Crusader class that brings back memories of the Paladin from D2. Equipped with a large shield, heavy armor, and a flail, the Crusader specializes in hard hitting holy magic, crushing physical strikes, and powerful defensive abilities. An example of the class’s capabilities includes being able to create holy auras on the ground that can buff allies and damage foes within them. Running along with Blizzard’s design philosophy of setting your skills to play how you want, you can likely either play as a classic holy supporter, or a holy ass-kicker.

The expansion is set to be released sometime in 2014, though expect the usual Blizzard delays as they fine tune everything until an actual date is revealed.
