What? You thought physical media was going to die because of the internet and streaming services like Netflix? Despite some people thinking physical media is going the way of the dinosaurs, Blu-ray has been increasing in sales (12% in 2012) according to EMA. And with the PS4 and Xbox One both using Blu-ray drives, it’s not likely that the physical format will disappear anytime soon.

For you optical disc fans, you should be happy to know that Sony and Panasonic are teaming up together to work on the next-gen optical disc. Yes, the optical disc is still believed to be a viable format.

“Both Sony and Panasonic recognized that optical discs will need to accommodate much larger volumes of storage in years to come given the expected future growth in the archive market, and responded by formulating this agreement,” the companies said in a joint statement.

Viva la optical discs!
