Being released in Japanese theaters in 2011, U.S. fans of Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away) will now have a chance to check out From Up on Poppy Hill when it’s released on Blu-ray and DVD September 3, 2013. Disney has mainly been distributing Miyazaki’s animated films, but GKIDs, in conjunction with Cinedigm, has the honor of distributing the movie to home viewers.

From Up on Poppy Hill is written by Hayao Miyazaki and directed by Goro Miyazaki (Yes, Hayao Miyazaki’s son). This is the first time that the father and son have teamed up for a feature-length.

For the American release, we get an English dub from voice actors like Gillian Anderson (X-Files), Sarah Bolger (The Spiderwick Chronicles), Beau Bridges (Max Payne), Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween), Bruce Dern (Django Unchained), Isabelle Fuhrman (The Hunger Games), Christina Hendricks (Mad Men), Ron Howard (Happy Days), Chris Noth (Sex and the City), Emily Osment (Hannah Montana), Aubrey Plaza (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), Charlie Saxton (The Happening), Alex Wolff (The Sitter) and Anton Yelchin (Star Trek). That’s a lot of big-name talent.

From Up on Poppy Hill will be available on Blu-ray+ DVD 2-Pack ($34.95srp), DVD 2-Pack ($29.94srp) and Cable VOD on September 3rd, 2013.

Synopsis – “The dazzling, hand-drawn FROM UP ON POPPY HILL is set in Yokohama in 1963. Japan is picking itself up from the devastation of World War II and preparing to host the Olympics. The mood is one of both optimism and conflict as the young generation struggles to throw off the shackles of a troubled past. Against this backdrop of hope and change, a friendship begins to blossom between high school students Umi (Sarah Bolger) and Shun (Anton Yelchin) – but a buried secret from their past emerges to cast a shadow on the future and pull them apart.”
