Sam Heughan cast as Jamie Fraser in Starz’s Outlander

Sam Heughan cast as Jamie Fraser

Some of you were probably sad to see the end of the Battlestar Galactica series from developer Ronald D. Moore. I think it’s one of the best sci-fi stories out there, as it has greatly influenced other awesome sci-fi stories, like the video game Mass Effect. The Galactica series has been over for a while, and now I’m looking forward to Moore’s next project, Outlander (not to be confused with Ubisoft’s Outland).

Starz, in association with Sony Pictures, has announced today that they have cast Sam Heughan as Jamie Fraser in Outlander, which will premiere on Starz in 2014. Moore will be adapting the series from the best-selling book by Diana Gabaldon. The book has already sold over 20 million copies and has been on the New York Times best-sellers list six times.

“Oh. My. God. That man is a Scot to the bone and Jamie Fraser to the heart. Having seen Sam Heughan not just act, but be Jamie, I feel immensely grateful to the production team for their painstaking attention to the soul of the story and characters,” said Diana Gabaldon.

Outlander is a story about a married combat nurse, Claire Randall, from 1945 who gets transported back into the year 1743. Jamie Fraser is a young Scottish clan lord who gets into an affair with her.

“Armed with sheer grit and enduring strength, he is a strapping young Scottish clan lord with a complicated past and a disarming sense of humor. He is intelligent, principled, and, by 18th century standards, educated and worldly, with a tenderness and compassion that stands out in contrast to his contemporaries. A natural leader of men, he has no political ambitions or desire for battlefield glories. Instead, he wishes to remove the price on his head and return to his family’s ancestral farm.”
