‘Sir, You Are Being Hunted’: A new spin on the most dangerous game

You’ve been running for days across the English countryside. Tired and bedraggled, you make your way to what appears to be an abandoned farmhouse. Hopefully you can lie low, get some much needed rest and maybe some food. Tea and biscuits sound really good right now. As your mind runs to thoughts of strawberry jam, you hear a gun shot behind you. Lunch will have to wait. You’re being hunted, and murderous robots never get tired.

This is the setting for the forthcoming game Sir, You Are Being Hunted from indie studio Big Robot. The game is an open world, FPS, survival mashup. The player is spawned in an English countryside and is forced to survive and gather supplies while being hunted by gentleman robots.

One of the reasons behind the creation of Hunted, is that the developers wanted several games with which to sharpen their ‘procedural-world generation project’. Big Robot founder, Jim Rossignol, describes his project thusly:

[From a development point of view, Hunted is a stepping stone to what we want to do with our procedural-world generation project, Lodestone. The world-building tech for Lodestone is well developed, but actually we wanted to do so much with it that breaking down some of the tasks into entire spin-off games made sense. Hunted, therefore, is an experiment in the kind of intelligence required for robots to hunt each other – and you – in a dynamic open world.]

In November of 2012, a Kickstarter was launched to help fund the game, and by the project’s end had raised £92,551 well exceeding their £40,000 goal. Since the close of the Kickstarter project, Big Robot has been releasing development gameplay videos showcasing the Hunted’s environments and mechanics.

Sir, You Are Being Hunted sounds like a perfect blend of Downton Abbey and The Most Dangerous Game, so if your tired of zombies and want to give murderous robots a try, you might want to keep an eye out for Sir, Your Are Being Hunted.
