Hero Complex Film Fest: The Devil’s Backbone/Pan’s Labyrinth and Guillermo Del Toro

Saturday at the Los Angeles Times Hero Complex Film Fest, Guillermo del Toro was on hand to discuss not only The Devil’s Backbone and Pan’s Labyrinth, but also his other (many, many) projects on his plate. Guillermo Del Toro gave updates on his in development project Justice League Dark and the status of his HBO series Monster (based on the Japanese manga by author Naoki Urasawa).

After screening of The Devil’s Backbone, a new trailer for Pacific Rim played to the audience. When the feeling of awe subsided it was time for the man himself to join the party. During the QA, I noticed that he’s very passionate about his projects, even to the point of stating that he’d die for his movies if it came down to it. He also doesn’t take on any job for money; if he doesn’t believe in the project then he won’t take it on.

When it came to the audience QA, Guillermo Del Toro answered questions on his many upcoming projects. On Justice League Dark, Del Toro revealed that the roster he wants for Justice League Dark features Constantine, Swamp Thing, Madame Xanadu, Deadman, and Zantanna. On Monster, Del Toro said that he just submitted the pilot script to HBO last week and that they’re reading it right now. He revealed his version is very respectful of Urasawa’s manga, and also gained permission from Urasawa to adapt his work. Urasawa had only one request; Urasawa requested that Del Toro submit to him an outline for each episode of the theoretical first season.

Now that you’ve got the cliff notes version of the QA, listen to the entire hour long QA right here! I guarantee you’ll love the man even more, he’s just that awesome and that honest.

Pacific Rim destroys theaters on July 11th.
