Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver confirmed to be in The Avengers 2

Word has been floating around the internet in recent days that a certain brother and sister would be joining The Avengers in the sequel. “I’ve got these two characters, two of my favorite characters from the comic books.” Whedon said at the Iron Man 3 LA premiere. “A brother/sister act. They’re in the movie, that’s exciting.” Running down the list of mainstays in the Avengers, the only one that comes to mind is Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. Turns out that this true after all. In this week’s Entertainment Weekly a juicy detail was dropped in the magazine.

Some online rumors turn out to be true, however. A source confirms to EW that the twin characters Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch will be joining The Avengers 2, which Whedon hinted at recently when he said he was writing a brother-sister duo into the movie.

I know exactly what you’re thinking, “But Mark aren’t Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver owned by Fox because they’re mutants?” Well I’m glad you thought that! Truth of the matter is both Fox AND Marvel can use the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. Kevin Feige stated that, “It’s a little complicated. If they want to use them in the ‘X-Men’ movies they could, if we want to use them in the ‘Avengers’ movie we could.”

To further clarify the legality of all this, both Marvel Studios and Fox can use the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver on the big screen right now but whomever uses them first can move forward with those characters, while the other company cannot. Since Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver aren’t being used in next year’s X-Men: Days of Future Past you can expect to see the brother and sister combo to appear in future MCU movies for good. The one thing they cannot do is be able to mention that they are, in fact, Magneto’s children. Magneto is owned by Fox, and unless there’s special permission, Marvel won’t be able to name drop Magneto in their films.
