Iron Man 3: A rundown of the new armors in Tony’s ‘Iron Legion’ (potential spoilers)

Next week’s release of Oz: The Great and Powerful may bring about the brand new trailer for Marvel’s Iron Man 3. According to Bleeding Cool who’ve seen the new trailer, we can expect the following tidbits from the trailer:

  • U.S. President (William Sadler) declares war on Mandarin and his organization The Ten Rings.
  • Multiple shots of The Mandarin threatening Tony Stark.
  • An upset Tony tells Mandarin that “it’s personal and that he’s coming for him.”
  • Tony and Rhodey flying together into battle, along with the Iron Legion.
  • There are “dozens” of Iron Man suits flying with them and Stark refers to them as “his boys.”
  • The additional armors all look different, many with never-before-seen designs.
  • There’s a final shot of a large armor suit bashing through a wall.

The one thing to take note is the part of the description that talks about the Iron Legion. A leaked promo image from the Hasbro Assemblers toy line features the many suits that Tony may use in his Iron Legion. It’s been known already that Iron Man 3 will be loosely based on Warren Ellis’ Extremis storyline, and having Tony injected with the Extremis virus makes sense especially when commanding all of these pilotless suits.

Tony Stark and the Funk Iron Legion

So let’s take a look at the different suits shall we? Note: We’re not including War Machine/Iron Patriot in here since Tony won’t be controlling the suit.

I. The Mark XLVII (Extremis armor)

The most widely known of the new suits. The Mark XLVII – or as I like to call it the Extremis armor – is the suit that is controlled by the Tony Stark’s mind after being injected with the Extremis techno virus. The suit is able to fly in separate pieces and wrap itself around Tony as needed. It also allows Tony to remotely control the suit, even when he’s not wearing it.

II. The Hulkbuster

While it has been known that the Hulk will not appear in any Marvel movie anytime soon, the inclusion of the Hulkbuster is intriguing. My theory is that the introduction of the Hulkbuster will be similar to how it was used in Iron Man: Armored Adventures: First use it to take down a difficult foe (ie. The Mandarin and his army), then use it later to take down the Hulk. This is especially true if the rumor of Phase 3 being based off of the World War Hulk storyline is true.

III. The Deep Space Suit

Ahh the Deep Space Suit. There are many various of a space suit in the comics but the suit we’ll be focusing on is the current Godkiller armor that appears in Iron Man vol. 5 #4. The Godkiller suit includes a sports back-mounted rocket thrusters and a redesigned helmet. The new armor also contains an A.I. named P.E.P.P.E.R., which is modeled after Pepper Potts. Two weeks ago we reported about the rumor that at the secret ending of Iron Man 3, Tony would fly into space and would appear in Guardians of the Galaxy. The leaked image of the Deep Space Suit only added fuel to the theory. I guess we’ll find out in a few months.

IV. The Heartbreaker

So far The Heartbreaker armor isn’t modeled after any pre-existing armor in the comics (as far as I know). The Heartbreaker armor though is rumored to be the final armor that Tony uses in the finale to battle Mandarin and the other villains who have been strengthened by the Extremis technology (Aldrich Killian in a Mallen-type role, Eric Savin, among others). As you can see, the armor contains a large chestpiece which will most likely be used in a massive unibeam attack. I can already hear the Marvel vs. Capcom 2 players already yelling “UNIBEAM!” in theaters.

So there you have it. So far I think the concept art looks slick and cannot wait to see these armors in action in next week’s trailer unveiling.

Iron Man 3 hits theaters May 3rd.
