Assassin’s Creed III’s Connor and Aveline cosplays look legit…but is it racist?

I guess I must have been living under a rock, since I just now discovered the awesome cosplaying of Connor Kenway and Aveline de Grandpré from Assassin’s Creed III and Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation, respectively. The outfits are very detailed and look accurate, and the texture is simply beautiful. They even darkened certain areas to give the outfits more dimension and that video-game-lighting look. It’s like video game characters coming to life.

The cosplayers behind the characters are Rick Boer and his wife, Dominique Boer. Rick is the man responsible for making the outfits, and his talent definitely shows. Ubisoft was so impressed that they brought the husband and wife to play Assassin’s Creed III early. This reminds me of Precious Cosplay getting a chance to fly to Japan to meet Hideo Kojima, the creator of Metal Gear Solid, thanks to her female Raiden cosplay. I’m so jelly.

But all is not sunshine and rainbows. Some members of the Tumblr community took it upon themselves to express their dislike of the cosplay, since they considered the couple racist for darkening their skin color. This led to Rick taking down any photos that could be considered “racially insensitive.” This also led to Dominique crying, who happens to be of mixed heritage.

“Another thing is the skin color of my wife. I found she was being called racially insensitive as well on the internet. This can be said about me. But when I talked about changing the make-up to more natural matching colors she got angry and burst into tears. She IS NOT going to change her skin-tone for anyone and she hasn’t done that for the Aveline make-up job either. My wife is of mixed heritage and she’s proud of it.”

Drama aside, I think the cosplay outfits look amazing, and I’m happy to see somebody portray these characters authentically.

Rick is also known for his Assassin’s Creed cosplay of Altair. Check out this ad featuring him as the Grand Master Assassin.
