Petro Vlahos – Special affects pioneer dead at 96

Special affects pioneer and Academy Award winner Petro Vlahos died this weekend. His name may be obscure through recent years, but his work towards the successful use of a green screen was essential toward a lot of the special affects used today.

His direct hands on involvement most notable began throughout the film Mary Poppins and its penguin dance scene. Later down the road he was involved with many Disney films such as The Love Bug and Bedknobs and Broomsticks.

The work that Vlahos contributed would later be used and seen by millions in such films as: Star Wars, Avatar, and so many more.
