Reece Shearsmith will portray the Second Doctor Patrick Troughton in Doctor Who docudrama

Reece Shearsmith, from The League of Gentlemen (a hit British sitcom), has been cast as Patrick Troughton in the Doctor Who biopic An Adventure in Space and Time. Troughton played the Second Doctor in Doctor Who between 1966 to 1969. His co-star in The League of Gentlemen is Doctor Who writer and executive producer Mark Gatiss.

When asked about Shearsmith in the role, Gatiss stated “We were in the midst of League of Gentlemen and I just remember thinking, if anyone plays Patrick Troughton, it should be Reece. … Like the second Doctor, he’s small, saturnine and a comic genius. The complete package. He thought it was a fantastic idea and I’ve kind of nurtured it all this time.”

Gatiss recently tweeted a photo of Dalek on the set of the docudrama.

The Doctor Who docudrama will be for the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who. It is starring David Bradley as the William Hartnell (the First Doctor), Brian Cox as BBC head of Drama Sydney Newman, Jessica Raine as Doctor Who’s first producer Verity Lambert, Jamie Glover as actor William Russell, Jemma Powell as actress Jacqueline Hill, Jeff Rawle as associate producer Mervyn Pinfield, and Claudia Grant as actress Carole Ann Ford. It is directed by Terry McDonogugh.
