Talking nerdy with SuicideGirls’ co-founder, Missy Suicide

Of all the girls out there in the world, I’m particularly fond of the goth, punk, and Metal girls with tattoos. Yeah, I like my girls edgy. But where can one find pin-up girls of that caliber online? Thanks to SuicideGirls, my prayers have been answered. For those of you living in the shadows, SuicideGirls is a community-based site that features lovely naked alternative models. They have a new book that was released in January called Hard Girls, Soft Light. To help promote the book, I had the opportunity to talk to Missy Suicide, the co-founder of SuicideGirls. She also reveals her obsession with Game of Thrones and her favorite heroes.

John “Spartan” Nguyen: Hey Missy, how’s it going?

Missy Suicide: Good, how are you?

I’m doing great! Let’s get the mandatory brief history of SuicideGirls out of the way.

SuicideGirls started almost 12 years ago in 2001. We started in Portland, Oregon. It was a time before social networking really even existed; before Friendster, Facebook, Twitter and Myspace. We wanted to give the girls that were featured in the photos a place where they can express themselves in their words as well as through their photos. It was also before Kat Von D and Ed Hardy and all that, so tattoos were still taboo. Girls with tattoos and piercings weren’t featured in high-fashion magazines. And those were the girls who I thought were the most beautiful; girls that lived by their own rules.

Do fans of SuicideGirls have a nickname?

They don’t really. We should coin a term. They’re just fans of SG. As for our fans, I think there are a thousand fans who have the SG logo tattooed on them. We give them a lifetime membership for the tattoos.

That’s definitely a good incentive to get a SuicideGirls tattoo.

As for our community, we’ve had several hundred couples who have met on the site who got married. Dozens of babies have been born because their parents met on SuicideGirls. It really is a community. There are groups where they can share their interests like video games, music, and etc.

Let’s talk about the new book, Hard Girls, Soft Light.

Hard girls; it’s more of the British slang term for hard. The girls are tough and strong, but a little bit wild. They don’t take shit from anyone, but they can also be vulnerable and sweet. The usual shots would have the harsh studio light with white background. We wanted to show them in a soft light, like you would wake up next to them in the morning and see their natural beauty. The book came out of the fact that we haven’t had a book in four years. The soft pictures on the site are voted by members on which they think is the best. The members have a big influence on it.

Is there a SuicideGirls nerd book coming out?

We’re working on a nerd book, but I don’t know if we can say anything about it yet.

Okay, I’ll leave it at that.

It’s crazy how many of the Suicide Girls are geek girls. They may not look like the type, but we have girls who are into comic books, sci-fi, Doctor Who and everything. For example, if you look at the cover for our Hard Girls, Soft Light book, you wouldn’t think that one of our girls is a big Doctor Who fan. There’s a game called BigHead Bash that American McGee does, and it’s going to start featuring the Suicide Girls in the next month. We have a comic book that came out two years ago, and we’re talking about doing another one. Everybody is always super excited for Comic-Con. It’s the girls’ favorite event. They have so much fun and dress in different costumes including Star Wars and Doctor Who.

What do you geek out on?

I’m currently obsessed with Game of Thrones now.

Who’s your favorite character?

It’s tough. Throughout the book, it kind of changes. I love Daenerys, but she’s getting more power hungry. I love Jon Snow. He’s tough but vulnerable. He’s never accepted.

Just like Hard Girls, Soft Light.

[laughs] We did a photo set where one of the girls dressed up like Daenerys. It looked pretty amazing.

Who’s your favorite Superhero?

I always liked Storm from X-Men. She can control the weather, and she’s pretty badass. Does Daenrys count as a superhero? Because she can be pretty badass too. And maybe Wonder Woman.

As for my last question, what can new fans expect from SuicideGirls?

New fans should come for the pictures and stay for the community. It’s an opportunity to meet a ton of people who share their interests. Also, hot naked tattooed girls is always a plus. For $4 a month, I think that’s the best way to spend money on a site.
