The Rise of the Kickstarter

It’s already 2013 and I’m still backed up on games. Yes I know this sounds like a personal problem, but there are a lot of new games constantly being released by Indie game developers, and it’s damn hard trying to catch up!

One of the great things that’s occurring nowadays is the “kickstarter”. Basically these are game developers that actually ask the public to donate money in order to help develop their games. I like this and the reason is simple: It helps the developer to create the games that THEY want under no specific time constraints that are usually levied by big name publishers. It’s as simple as that. They don’t have to deal with the hassle of red-tape, marketing monkeys, corporate executive monkeys, and forced release dates.

Game done yet? Game done yet? Game done yet?

Game done yet? Game done yet? Game done yet?

We all love to hear release dates, but more often than not, we get games that have the feel of being “rushed” when we receive them. This usually leads to disappointment with the said product. A good recent example would be the game Alien: Colonial Marines. This game was supposed to restart our love for the Alien franchise. It was supposed to deliver us pulse pounding action, and all you have is your weapon and your Space Marine buddy next to you trying to survive the Xenomorphs. Instead we got crappy game play and graphics that looked like we time traveled back to 2005. Another game that seemed like it was on a deadline was Mass Effect 3. Yes, yes, we all hate the ending and that’s exactly why I believe the game was “rushed” to meet a marketing release date. Anyways, I diverge from my point.

Kickstarters are going to be the wave of the future….which is now….at least according to Marty McFly. There are a couple kickstarters that I am personally excited about. One of them is the futuristic Cyberpunk RPG known as Shadowrun. If you’ve played the old school SNES version of Shadowrun, I suggest you check out this coming one. It’s made by the original developers and not the ones that turned Shadowrun into an FPS a couple years back. That game was complete GARBAGE. Here’s some background on it:

For you Walking Dead fans, there is a kickstarter that you should all be excited for. The game is called “Dead State”. Just like the Walking Dead, you try to survive a zombie outbreak by seeing if you can maintain good relationships with the random strangers you meet, and see if you can maintain your “home-base” from zombie attacks, outsider attacks from humans, and also internal struggles, such as rationing of food. Check out the video here for more information. It’s pretty cool.

These are the kinds of games that we all want to see from every developer. A game that was molded and created from the ground up with no contamination or pressure from the outside….besides the money from the public. Our money helps these developers create the masterpieces that they are promising to us instead of a crappy by-product. Go and support your local kickstarter today!
