Nintendo got its toes wet in the DLC pool with New Super Mario Bros. 2 on 3DS, and is now feeling comfortable enough to dive in head first. On launch day, new owners of Fire Emblem: Awakening can download a map that will be temporarily available starting from the game’s launch. Along with this introductory map, there will be plenty of other content available for purchase on day one. After that, expect the following to invade your mythical realm on a regular basis: new class types, skills, playable characters, maps with new storylines, and maps that allow players to earn more experience points, gold, or other rare items.

If you’re not ready to submit your credit card to otherworldly destruction just yet, Nintendo will also be providing similar types of content for free (including new storylines) via SpotPass for a limited time after the game’s launch.

StreetPass is being utilized in Fire Emblem: Awakening in a pretty interesting way. Users will set up a “StreetPass Team” (or “band of heroes, if you like) of 10 units. Custom messages and unit names will be seen by other players. In addition, StreetPass characters will randomly appear on the world map, allowing users to recruit the team leader with gold, buy weapons and items that team is carrying, or battle to win that team’s leader for free. Players renown ranking will also be tracked based on battles won to show off via StreetPass.

So, is this a comprehensive enough DLC strategy to get you excited about prolonging the life of the latest Fire Emblem? Are you ready to make a purchase, or have you jumped onto the “wait and see” ship?

Fire Emblem: Awakening will be available on 3DS this February 4th.
