Casting auditions underway for Guardians of the Galaxy

With Iron Man 3 currently in post-production, Thor: The Dark World wrapping up filming next month, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier filming to start next year, things have been relatively quiet from the Guardians of the Galaxy camp. That’s about to change as auditions are finally underway for the James Gunn helmed space epic.

L to R, Top to Bottom: Joel Edgerton, Jack Huston, Jim Sturgess, Lee Pace, Eddie Redmayne, James Marsden, Garrett Hedlund, Sullivan Stapleton

Variety and Deadline have reported that a series of young up-and-coming actors have signed test deals for the film. Reported are Joel Edgerton (Warrior), Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire), Jim Sturgess (21), Lee Pace (Pushing Daisies), and Eddie Redmayne (Lés Miserablé). The role that these actors are screen testing for is probably that of Peter Quill/Star-Lord, the leader of the Guardians. Other names that were mentioned that are in contention are, Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy), James Marsden (X-Men), and Sullivan Stapleton (Strike Back).

While I haven’t seen Eddie Redmayne or Sullivan Stapleton in a film just yet, I can imagine either Joel Edgerton, based on his performance in Warrior, or Lee Pace because of his performance in Ceremony. Peter Quill is basically the happy medium between Captain America and Iron Man, a great leader who is brash and sarcastic but is great with coming up with a plan on the fly. Based on his quirky but serious performance in Ceremony, I really think Pace can pull of Star-Lord. Same thing can be said about Edgerton with the kind of gravitas he showed in Warrior. A damaged but fighter-to-the-end mantra he portrayed in Warrior is what makes Star-Lord who he is.

Expect a casting announcement to come within the next few weeks.
