Video game soundtracks: Assassin’s Creed III and Black Ops 2

Assassin’s Creed III just came out for PS3 and Xbox 360 on October 30th. The game’s soundtrack was also released on that date and features tracks composed by Lorne Balfe. His first entry into the world of Assassin’s Creed was in Revelations with the haunting, yet beautiful theme song. Now he’s ready to tackle on the entire project. Although I do miss Jesper Kyd’s take on the Assassin’s Creed series, Balfe comes up with some epic and sweeping scores. So far my favorite tracks are “Fight Club” and “Temple Secrets”. The funny thing about “Fight Club” is that it makes me want to dance more than fight. “Temple Secrets” gives you that feeling of finally , and judging from the title, you probably know why.

“When I found out that the new Assassin’s Creed was going to based on the American Revolution, and that we were introducing a new Assassin born from a Native American mother and a British father,” said Balfe, “I realized this was going to be a difficult score to write.”

“Visually, the game is rich in colors and I wanted the music to take players to new levels of the Assassin’s Creed franchise,” Balfe continued. “There are large naval scenes in the game and I wanted to create an epic feeling that would compliment the grandeur of the visuals. This was the beginning of America as we know it today—filled with cultures from across the world. With such diversity available, I was able to bring Celtic and other musical influences into the game to further accentuate the complexities of the game itself.”

Also in video game soundtrack news, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Soundtrack will be available on the same day as the game’s release on November 13, 2012. It’ll be ready to download via iTunes and select digital marketplaces. The soundtrack is composed by Trent Reznor and Jack Wall. Even though Trent Reznor is known for being the lead singer in Nine Inch Nails, he knows proper etiquette for movies and games. His recent composing gig in The Social Network is noteworthy. As for Jack Wall, he has been one of the major composers for the Mass Effect trilogy. The Black Ops 2 Soundtrack contains 40 tracks and will cost $11.99. If you got the hardened edition, then the soundtrack is already included.
