ThunderCats: Season 1 Book Two – DVD review

ThunderCats was one of the first cartoons I watched growing up. I can vividly remember running around with my official Sword of the Omens screaming at the top of my lungs, “Thunder, Thunder, ThunderCats, Hooooooo!” Unfortunately, my grandmother likes to throw things away or give random stuff to Goodwill, and my sword happens to be one of them. True story.

While I never got over the fact that my grandmother threw away a part of my childhood, the ThunderCats will always be a big part of my youth. So you can imagine, to my surprise, when they announced a new series was in the works.  Following the leak of the test footage for a CG ThunderCats movie last year, I was somewhat skeptical about a new series. Upon watching the first 3 episodes, I was pleasantly surprised. The new series took what made the original great and expanded on it, giving more dimension to everyone’s favorite characters.

In this DVD fans will be able to see the re-imagined robotic bears, the Berbils. I remember the original Berbils use to creep me out. In the new series, the Berbils are a lot more tongue in cheek. Anytime they are with Pathro it is always comedic gold. This DVD also includes Lion-O’s struggle to master the Sword of Omen’s Sight Beyond Sight and the love triangle between Lion-O, Tygra and Cheetara.

List of Episodes:

-Sight Beyond Sight
-The Forest of Magi Oar
-Into the Astral Plane
-Between Brothers
-New Alliance
-Trail of Lion-O (Part One)
-Trails of Lion-O (Part Two)

Video Quality

Video for ThunderCats Season 1 Book Two DVD comes in anamorphic widescreen. While it may not be a Blu-ray, the video quality for the DVD is actually rather good.  Colors for the animation are crisp and clear. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Cartoon Network really knows how to put their shows on DVD.

Audio Quality

The audio for the DVD comes in Dolby Digital Surround Sound. The audio is well mixed, but is mostly in the center channel. The bass really booms at pivotal moment in the show.

Audio and Subtitles are available in English and Spanish.

There’s not much in the Extras department other than a couple of trailers for other Warner Brother cartoons. The lack of Extras is kind of disappointing, but since it is not the full season it is understandable.

ThunderCats Season 1 Book Two is a good DVD with some great episodes. If you’ve already bought Book One, you cannot skip out on this DVD. Also, if you’re a fan of the series, you might want to pick up the DVD to help support the show. As of right now, the show is currently in hiatus and it is not certain if it will get renewed for another season.
