Patent suit against Activision Blizzard proceeds

Patent trolls are pretty common place, but not too often do they go after really big game, the kind that can hire as many lawyers as they damn well please. In this case, company Worlds Inc. is suing company Activision Blizzard for patent infringement regarding the World of Warcraft game and its numerous expansions.

The actual trial for the case is set to proceed on June 27 of next year. The case involves Worlds Inc,’s claim that WoW infringes on patents that they hold for technology that¬†“enable users to interact in a virtual space.” In particular, they are based around interactive virtual worlds, a key component of MMO games, and if the patent is sustained, can affect most titles that are active today.

So why did Worlds Inc. wait until now to use a patent case on the world’s most successful MMORPG that was released all the way back in 2004, and has since become a gaming and cultural icon? More money, of course.
