Rumored shortlist for Captain America 2’s female lead

Looks like Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has been having a busy couple of weeks. With news of Joss Whedon signing up for Avengers 2, the search for a Guardians of the Galaxy director, the Iron Man 3 filming, and now you can add search for Captain America’s female lead in the upcoming sequel to his list of to-dos. The New York Post listed three actresses in the running for the female lead in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. They are Anna Kendrick (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World… We’ll try not to mention Twilight…crap, we just did), Felicity Jones (Like Crazy), and Imogen Poots (28 Weeks Later).

L to R: Anna Kendrick, Felicity Jones, and Imogen Poots

Since the story of Captain America set in modern times, Cap’s connection with S.H.I.E.L.D. will be highlighted in the movie. The combination of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Winter Soldier arc, points to Sharon Carter being the female lead in the sequel. In the comics, Sharon Carter became a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent through the stories of her aunt, Peggy Carter. Eventually, she would become involved with Cap and play a role in the Winter Soldier story arc.

These three actresses are an interesting choice, since Sharon Carter is a tough girl who can hold her own, and can stand side-by-side with Cap in battle. I just don’t get that vibe from any of these actresses in the movies I’ve seen them in. In my opinion, the actress should already have that tough exterior while showing little nuances of femininity (think Arwen from LOTR). Out of the three, my personal choice though would be Anna Kendrick, as she has the acting chops and also has that “Peggy Carter resemblance” look.

As for Peggy Carter herself, Hayley Atwell isn’t currently cast but if and when she does sign onto the sequel, expect her to be featured in flashbacks and maybe a way older Peggy.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is set to be released on April 1st, 2014.
