3DS Passes 4 Million Units Sold

After an incredibly rough launch, the 3DS was already being likened to a modern day Virtual Boy, a failure in the eyes of gamers everywhere. However, Nintendo was proud to announce during their reveal of their 2011 sales figures that the troubled handheld has made a rare comeback, passing 4 million units at the end of the year.

Overall, Nintendo managed to get roughly 12 million hardware sales. The 3DS sales was part of that, with Wii consoles taking up another 4.5 million. The remaining 3.4 million is being attributed to sales of other DS handhelds. These numbers are likely the result of several core Nintendo titles finally getting released, of which Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 managed to surpass one million units each in North America alone. All of this means that Nintendo is set for a good start going into 2012.

Now that Nintendo is back to printing money, here’s hoping the upcoming WiiU will be able to meet the demands of the gaming audience.
