‘Star Wars’ and ‘Lord of the Rings’ Swordsman Bob Anderson Passes Away

Darth Vader is one of the most iconic villains in cinema history. It’s sad to hear that Bob Anderson, who was responsible for portraying Darth Vader as a master lightsaber practitioner, has passed away on January 1, 2012.

When we think of Darth Vader, we always think of James Earl Jones. He’s just one important part that helps make up the villain including David Prowse, who was the body of Vader. Bob Anderson was an expert in fencing, swordplay, choreographed fights and did stunt work. His Darth Vader fight scenes can be seen in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

“It was always supposed to be a secret, but I finally told [director] George [Lucas] I didn’t think it was fair any more,” Hamill told Starlog magazine. “Bob worked so bloody hard that he deserves some recognition. It’s ridiculous to preserve the myth that it’s all done by one man.”

He was also a big component in the stunt choreography in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Check out the 4:20 mark to see him behind the scenes on the set with the cast and crew sharing their experiences with him.
