Comic Hit List: Avengers – X-Sanction #1

It looks like Cable is back and it looks like his mission now is to take out the Avengers. Since the 2010 events of the ‘Second Coming’ story arc where Cable sacrificed his own life to save the members of the X-Force, he now finds himself reunited with mutant ally Blaquesmith in a future where a nuclear winter decimated the landscape. Blaquesmith reveals to Cable the reason, which is because his daughter Hope wasn’t around to save it and those responsible for that were the Avengers.

The issue is divided between flashbacks (forwards, sideways, and upside down) to his present day beat down of the Avengers from the point of view of Cable. The team up of writer Jeph Loeb (Cable and Fantastic Four) and artist Ed McGuiness (Deadpool and Hulk) is just absolutely blockbuster, which leads up to the big Avengers vs. X-Men throwdown in 2012. Heck, in this opening issue we have the greatest soldier archetypes of the Avengers and the X-Men going toe-to-toe with each other. On top of that we also learn that technically Cable only has twenty four hours to live, and to achieve his goals, he has to travel back and forth between the present and the future.

My only real complaint here is the addition of the Falcon in the current ranks of the Avengers. Seriously…do you really need him? At current count there are multiple Avengers teams such as New Avengers, Secret Avengers, and ‘Classic‘ Avengers. With the roster filled up with characters such as Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Red Hulk, Iron Man, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Storm, Quake, Beast, Moon Knight, Ant-Man, War Machine, Sharon Carter, Thing, Ms. Marvel, Mockingbird, Wolverine, Vision, and to some extent Squirrel Girl, do we really need the Falcon? Even as canon fodder? Personally I think not.

At the moment ‘Avengers: X-Sanction’ seems a touch lacking in some areas which is a bit of concern since it’s only a four part series. Here’s hoping business picks up with the next issue.
