Panasonic, Samsung, SanDisk, Sony, & Toshiba: The Next Generation Secure Memory Initiative

We can now add Panasonic, Samsung, SanDisk, Sony, and Toshiba to the list of companies that are teaming up to bring consumers the next big thing in electronics. These 5 companies will begin to prep and secure licensing for the promotion of HD capable security SD cards. In addition to hardware peripherals, flash and embedded flash memory will also be a part of the initiative. Corporate CTO of Panasonic Corporation, Yoshiyuki Miyabe, commented:

“Panasonic has always been an innovator in providing the best possible content viewing experience in the living room through development of Blu‐ray and Blu‐ray 3DTM technologies and products. With our new secure memory solution, we are excited to create a strong link between the living room experience and the mobile experience. Now consumers can enjoy watching premier content, such as movies, on the go with their smartphones and tablets.”

So what does this all mean? Well, have you ever downloaded or streamed HD content to your smartphone or tablet, but couldn’t really do much more with it? These 5 companies by the end of 2012 will have developed a secure way for HD protected content to be accessible and transferred from multiple devices by means of either an SD card or flash memory. We will probably first see digital HD media copies be protected and promoted followed by streaming content. This is a huge undertaking but will definitely pay off in the end for the consumer and manufacturer.
