Comic Hit List: Butcher, Baker, Candlestickmaker #5

From the pages of fan favorite ‘The Boys’ issue five of ‘Butcher, Baker, Candlestickmaker’ continues the back story of the team’s ruthless leader Billy Butcher. In this fifth issue we learn the actual steps of what led Butcher to become the man that he is now step by bloody step. We’ve seen him past issues as an angry boy, an angry solider at war, and later an angry man picking fights in pubs. But in the pages we now see the beginnings of the angry AND calculating leader of the Boys. Garth Ennis (Preacher and Hellblazer) and Darick Robertson (Transmopolitan and Punisher: Born) does a bang up job here recounting each and every terrible moment from Butcher learning what happened to his late wife’s diary to the details of what made him join in the fight against the supes.

I don’t know how but Ennis has managed to make this fifth issue even more intense and emotional than the last issue which is just absolutely amazing. Combine Butcher’s military background, his penchant for the ultra violence, add a dash of compound V, and give him a purpose you got yourself a weapon of mass destruction right there. I can’t wait until the final confrontation between Butcher and the Homelander. And let’s not forget the fantastic artwork we have here as well. Robertson really delivers on the facial expressions especially as he reads through the pages of Becky’s diary.
Overall compared to the rest of ‘The Boys’ other minis ‘Butcher, Baker, Candlestickmaker’ stands out to be hands down ranked the best of the current three. If you haven’t yet hopped onto bandwagon yet then hurry up and buy the ticket because not since Ennis’ series ‘Preacher’ have I read something that has me looking forward to my weekly trips to the comic book store. Seriously each and every issue of ‘The Boys’ or one of their miniseries has always blew my mind and left me wanting more each time I get my grubby little hands on them. Stan Lee, Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, Frank Miller, and Garth Ennis all have one word in common with each other…legendary.
