Comic Hit List: Hellboy – The Fury #3

In this final issue of a three part miniseries the wielder of the right hand of doom stands alone without allies against the terrible might of the dragon known as Nimue. This is a crucial moment in the Hellboy series where even in triumph he will lose as well. With Ragorak literally around the corner Hellboy fights tooth and nail against overwhelming odds with the knowledge that this will not end well at all. I don’t want to spoil the whole thing for you but Hellboy’s battle against the dragon can be summed up with one word…epic. Fans of the Hellboy series or Mike Mignola (Hellboy and B.P.R.D.) will not want to miss this landmark issue.

Mignola does a fantastic job here weaving a tale that will have readers put down the issue, blink, pick it back up, and read it over once again (I know I did). I love how even while Hellboy is being tossed about like a rag doll he never gives up and even makes his trademark sarcastic comments while in the mist of battle. Artist Duncan Fegredo (Jay & Silent Bob and Judge Dredd) delivers some powerful imagery in this his final issue of Hellboy. From the action to the emotional scenes he brings his A game throughout the issue. And the use of colors by Dave Stewart (B.P.R.D. and Captain America) was used perfectly from the red and orange hues used in the first half of the issue to the more somber grays towards the end of the book.

As I sit here writing my take on this issue I find it difficult to continue on without revealing one of the major spoiler (if not THE spoiler) of the issue and that is the death of Hellboy. It was truly exciting to be able to read about the life and times of the demonic adventurer known as Hellboy all these years and be able to bear witness his end as well. But fear not Hellboy fans for even in death this does not spell the end for the Beast of the Apocalypse as Mignola stated, and I for one can not wait to find out what happens next.
