No Big Marvel Studios Presence at San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H

Hall H during San Diego Comic-Con has always been reserved for the big guns; like last year’s The Avengers appearance with Robert Downy Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Clark Gregg (Agent Coulson) and Joss Whedon.

This year however, it was rumored that Marvel Studios would be scaling back their presence at San Diego Comic-Con, because it cost them money and the appearance of the major casts didn’t help them out. It’s now confirmed that nothing major is planned for SDCC 2011 for Hall H. At least they’ll still have a presence at the con, unlike Warner Bros. with The Dark Knight Rises and The Man of Steel.

At least we still have Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man for Hall H.

Don’t expect the Avengers to reassemble in Hall H at Comic-Con International in July.

The official word from Marvel Studios is that their team will sit out the Hollywood previews in the 6,000-seat hall, where fans, bloggers and journalists from around the world come to see filmmakers and stars introduce and promote their upcoming spectacle movies.

The leadership at Marvel Studios is also quick to point out that sitting out Hall H is not synonymous with sitting out Comic-Con, which runs July 21-24; the studio will have a major presence on the convention showroom floor (one Marvel source cryptically said that the booth plan will be as attention-grabbing as last year’s Hall H panel), and there’s talk of a promotional event beyond the walls of the San Diego Convention Center, which might suggest a ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ promotion, premiere or special screenings.

This is what we’ll be missing from Hall H this year. I’m not really disappointed, since I never cared to wait in the really long lines overnight just to catch a glimpse of the actors or special footage for upcoming movies. What’s really going to be interesting is to see how it will affect SDCC in terms of hype and attendance, this year and so forth.

The Avengers will assemble in theaters on May 4, 2012.
