Bioware Delaying Mass Effect 3 to 2012 to Add Features

When I heard that Mass Effect 3 was coming out in Fall 2011, I was a little worried. After all, Mass Effect 2 had only come out in January of 2010. That 2011 release date would give Bioware less than two years to produce the third in the trilogy, the ending to one of the greatest series ever made.

Here’s what Bioware had to say:

Today we have confirmed that Mass Effect 3 will be released in the first three months of 2012. The development team is laser focused on making sure Mass Effect 3 is the biggest, boldest and best game in the series, ensuring that it exceeds everyone’s expectations.

Not only will this delay give Bioware the proper time necessary to make another magnum opus of a game, it will give our wallets some much needed respite from all of the attacks they’ll be receiving this year. I mean, Uncharted 3, Rage, Skyrim, Skyward Sword (presumably), and Deus Ex: Human Revolution all come out later this year. How am I supposed to play all of those!?

EA’s CEO, John Riccitiello, had another interesting thing to add to the conversation:

Essentially, step by step, [BioWare is] adjusting some of the gameplay mechanics and some of the features that you’ll see at E3 that can put this into a genre equivalent of shooter-meets-RPG, and essentially address a far larger market opportunity than Mass Effect 1 did and Mass Effect 2 began to approach.

For fans who were a little disappointed by the “dumbing down” of Mass Effect 2, this could be bad news. It seems as though they might be packing on even more action than before. By gameplay mechanics, I kind of hope they’re making the controls more similar to Uncharted 2 since they’re some of the most fluid for a third-person shooter. John also mentioned features. What other features might we get? Co-op? Multi-player?
