Neil Gaiman’s American Gods on HBO?

According to Deadline, HBO which plans to unveil their epic fantasy adaptation of George RR Martin‘s Game of Thrones this Sunday have also started talks to have Neil Gaiman‘s novel American Gods to be developed into another fantasy series.  Playtone (Tom Hank‘s production company) will be behind the production with Robert Richardson (Shutter Island, Inglourious Basterds and Kill Bill) and Neil Gaiman penning the opening episode.

American Gods tells the story of how humanity’s various deities still exist in modern times but are now weaker since man has moved on from them.  The protagonist of the tale is an ex-con who becomes the bodyguard of a confidence man who turns out to be an old deity trying to recruit troops to battle a new set of gods who reflects America’s obsession with technological advancements, media, celebrity, and drugs.  The 2002 book has won both the Stoker and Hugo Award among other prizes.
