Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City for Xbox 360, PS3 – New Online Competitive Game

The Resident Evil series is getting a new online competitive game this Fall called Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. Get ready for a deluge of information on what could be one of this year’s most interesting multiplayer titles.

Players will take control of one of two factions, the US Spec Ops, and Umbrella Security Services squad. The game focuses on objectives, one of which has the US Spec Ops defending Leon Kennedy from Umbrella. The squads are thus far known to be made up of four players. One interesting thing about the gameplay is that a character named Vector from the Umbrella team is able to cloak himself and get some previously inactive zombies to attack the opposite team. We don’t yet know whether or not players will be able to take control of any of Umbrella’s bio-organic weapons (BOW), or other popular characters from the series.

If you needed some proof of its existence, here it is.

All of this information is from the Official Xbox Magazine that should be out in stands on April 5th. In that interview, the gameplay was indirectly called action-packed:

“This is not a one-versus-one game where you’ve got one clip full of ammo and zombies on you.  If you’ve ever thought of those times in an RE game when you thought, ‘I’d wish I had a big gun’, that’s what this game is.  It’s not fair to give people big guns, then take all the ammo away.”

You can also get experience points that go towards weapons and abilities for your character. I like the fact that there are experience points to level up your character, but it’d be nice to know whether or not the experience is permanent, or a temporary boost for your character that goes away after the game is over. In one picture of the magazine you can see that zombies can be used as meat-shields ala Gears of War. Another interesting twist in the game allows players to alter the history of Resident Evil by killing some of the famous characters from the game.

With two opposing teams of four players and a neutral zombie/bio-monster infestation, things could be looking pretty awesome. I see this as Capcom’s take on Left 4 Dead, and I’m really liking the idea. I just hope ex-SOCOM developer “Slant Six” is up to the task of delivering a great game worth playing.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is scheduled to be out this Fall for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.
