Zac Efron and Morgan Freeman Rumored for “Akira” Live Action Adaptation

For those that don’t know, Katsuhiro Otomo’s legendary “Akira” anime and manga series is being adapted to a live action film. The movie is being produced by Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way production company and is directed by the Hughes Brothers. The Hughes Brothers have a few movies under their belt which include From Hell, Book of Eli and Dead Presidents.

As for the cast, nothing is set in stone as of yet, but there are rumors flying around. One of those rumors is that Zac Efron is in talks for playing the role of Shotaro Kaneda, the leader of The Capsules, a motorcycle gang in 2019 Neo Tokyo. Another rumor is that Morgan Freeman is being offered the role of General Shikishima, who heads the secret government project that conducts tests on psychic subjects. I can’t see Morgan Freeman filling this role, I picture him more like Dr. Eli Vance in Half-Life. It’s going to be interesting how the movie is if both of these actors are cast, as well as who they come up with for other roles. More importantly, who will fill the lead role of Tetsuo?
