Introducing the Blackberry Playbook Tablet

Research in Motion (RIM), who are the makers of Blackberry, have decided to jump into the tablet race with their new “Playbook” tab. The main competition that the Playbook will have is the Ipad and the Samsung Galaxy tab. The tablet will be roughly the same size as the Galaxy at 7 inches, in which both are slightly smaller than the Ipad that stands at 10 inches. Size isn’t the only thing the Playbook shares with the Galaxy, as they both carry the dual-core, 1GHz A9 processor. Other than size and the processor, everything about the Playbook is practically new.

First off, the Playbook will be running on a new OS by QNX called Neutrino. This OS can be considered a modern/updated version of the Linux/Unix OS. Another nice touch is that QNX systems can be found all over the world embedded in various systems from cars to even the fountains in front of the Bellagio hotel in Vegas. RIM states that from a developer’s standpoint, apps can be built based upon a multitude of technologies which include Java, Flash, Adobe Air, OpenGL and RIM’s own WebWorks HTML widget platform. Hmmm….do I foresee a Nerd Reactor app?

Other amenities included are two cameras, one front facing for video calling, the other facing away to take regular pictures and 1080p HD video playback. Unfortunately as of right now, there is no modem. This means that the tab would have to get connection through a tethered Blackberry device, which seems somewhat impractical. One can only hope that changes once the release date arrives, especially because Flash 10.1 and HTML5 is supported. RIM hasn’t said anything in terms of battery life as of yet either. Something RIM has stated though is that the device will be “jailbrake” proof. We’ll see how well this poses a challenge to top hackers around the world. In any event, this is just the first announcement from RIM about the Playbook, so a lot of things can still change. It is set to release sometime next year.
