Gabe Newell of Valve Talks about Why There Hasn’t Been a Half-Life Movie

Recently the managing director of Valve talked to PC Gamer magazine about the upcoming Portal 2 and rumors of there being a Half-Life 3 in development.  During his conversation, PC Gamer asked why the game company was never approached for a  Half-Life live-action movie. Gabe Newell said that they had in fact been approached numerous times by different directors and writers interested in adapting the property,“They would pitch us on their story. And their stories were just so bad. I mean, brutally, the worst. Not understanding what made the game a good game, or what made the property an interesting thing for people to be a fan of.” He later states that if the company was in fact interested in a live-action Half-Life, that they would simply just do it themselves.

A lot of game companies are taking the same route due to the horrible track record of Hollywood’s video game adaptations. Recently, Ubisoft has been rumored to have an Assassin’s Creed movie in the works. I think Half-Life would make a great movie if it is done correctly. One of the main qualities I loved about the game were in-game cinematics that draw you into the game.

PC Gamer magazine’s Valve Issue is currently available on in stores.
