“Bourne” Director Doug Liman to Direct All You Need Is Kill

Doug Liman has helmed some great films which include Swingers, GoThe Bourne Identity, and Mr. and Mrs. Smith. His one slip up I would consider is Jumper. In any event, Liman is set to direct a film adaptation of the widely popular Japanese anime novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka called “All You Need Is Kill.”

The novel is about an alien invasion that is happening. The story follows Keiji Kiriya, a new military recruit in the ongoing war. What’s interesting is that his daily routine entails starting his day fighting in the war and ends it with him dying, repeatedly. While he  fights off a seemingly never-ending invasion, he finds himself being reborn at the start of the same day, with a chance of leveling up. It feels like Groundhog Day meets Halo meets Scott Pilgrim.

Here is the official description:

In All You Need is Kill, a soldier pressed into battle against a superior alien species, gets killed in action, and relives his last day alive over and over. Eventually, he sees things change, he becomes a better warrior and discovers hints that might be the key to altering the outcome.

The novel looks like it would be a great read and I’m hoping the movie will hold to the true nature of the book as the story sounds very promising. Let’s hope that Liman brings his “A” game that helped produce The Bourne Identity and Mr. and Mrs. Smith and not his “WTF” game that helped create Jumper.
