Rumor: Namco vs Capcom and Capcom vs Namco

Capcom is no stranger to the Versus games ever since the X-Men vs Street Fighter series. It’s no surprise since Capcom was releasing X-men games and eventually created a whole new Versus series using both Marvel and Capcom characters. That also still proves true with the upcoming Marvel vs Capcom 3.

Capcom has also worked with SNK on Capcom vs. SNK: Millennium Fight 2000 and Capcom vs. SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium 2001, which wasn’t as big of a hit as the Marvel vs series, but was still a fun, old school fighting game. Eventually, SNK was the first company to take control of the Capcom versus series and created SNK vs Capcom Chaos, which followed more of the SNK style of fighting (mostly using the King of Fighters engine) and took lesser used characters from both companies to create, in my opinion, one of the funnest fighting games.

Fast forward to EVO 2010, Tekken 6 producer Harada called out Street Fighter producer Ono-san, to some verbal debate about what the mystery trailer Ono-san was hiding. Ono-san wouldn’t spill the beans and recently, the new trailer from Capcom that was shown ended up being Mega Man Universe. Of course we still don’t know much about the game until this years’ Comic-Con.

Was it planned, or was it just Harada just messing with Ono-san? Well according to Game Informer, rumor has it that both Namco and Capcom are possibly working on a new crossover fighting game. What makes it more interesting is that both companies will be working on their own version using different systems. What does this mean for the fans? It means Capcom will probably be using the Street Fighter IV’s engine to create Capcom vs Namco, and Namco will be using the Tekken 6’s engine to create Namco vs Capcom.

This wouldn’t be the first time the 2 companies worked together on a game, or in this case, games. Back in 2005 the two worked on Namco X Capcom, a strategy RPG that crossed over characters from both companies, which sadly never reached American hands.

In my opinion, this could be one of the craziest crossovers of all time, and the first to be created simultaneously. It would be interesting to see which game will be more popular. But that’s never a bad thing. People buy both versions of Pokemon, even though the game is identical to each other, except for a few Pokemons that are exclusive to each version. With this game, you are getting 2 completely different games.

So what characters would you like to see from either Namco or Capcom?
