What Can Lucha Libre Offer to Compete with WWE Games?

Mexican Wrestling has long been a tradition in my family. When I was a little kid, my uncles would tell me stories of wrestling legends Mil Mascaras and El Santo.  Although those names may not be as memorable in the states as Hulk Hogan or Stone Cold Steve Austin, they are still legends in their own right. To this day, I still own a vintage Mil Mascaras mask that no longer fits around my big head. When I heard the news about a Lucha Libre game being developed it immediately caught my attention and I loved the idea.

Lucha Libre AAA: Heroes del Ring is the first title from Latin America game developer SLANG.  Lucha Libre is a celebrated acrobatic and fast-paced wrestling style that is sure to make a unique wrestling game experience.  The game features 30 notable wrestlers from the AAA including Konnan, La Parka, Psicosis, and Vampiro.  The game will also feature other unlockable wrestlers from Japan and the US.  One really cool feature I like is the game option that allows you to choose to hear commentary in English or in Spanish with English subtitles.

Heroes del Ring also offers a Create-Your-Own Luchadore Mode, where you can choose to be on the side of good or evil.  The game also offers a very detailed and extensive mask customization mode, because for a Luchadore, your mask is very important to who you are.  In Lucha Libre, popularity is factored into the game experience and the building of your character.  The more popular you are, the more advance moves become available to you.  In the game you are given 2 story modes, depending on which side, good or evil, your created character or other playable characters are.

Online multi-player offers up to 4 player co-op in various matches.  One match mode that really stands out is the old school Mask vs Hair Match.  In the old days of wrestling,  the Loser Leave Town Match and the Mask vs Hair Match were huge matches in wrestling. I was very glad to see that SLANG had incorporated the Mask vs Hair Matches into their online multi-player mode.  If you lose the match online, your character will either lose their Mask or their Hair, and will remain that way in all online matches and story mode until you win 3 Ranked Matches in a row.

As far as the gameplay goes, for a first title I was pretty surprised.  There are still some bugs to work out with, like the collision detection, but overall the gameplay is fun and a great alternative to the WWE games. I’m highly anticipating the release of this title and hoping for a follow up from SLANG.

Lucha Libre AAA: Heroes de Ring hits the Wii, Xbox 360, and the PS3 August 10th, 2010.
