Blue Yeti X USB Mic review

Blue Yeti X

The Blue Yeti is one of the most popular microphones for streamers and video content creators, and the audio company is back with improvements by introducing a new model called the Yeti X. Like its predecessor, the Yeti X produces superb sound while having a bevy of new features like Blue VO!CE with custom presets and LED metering.

Unlike the Yeti’s mini USB port, the Blue Yeti X uses micro USB, which is widely used and is easier to replace. There’s also a 3.5mm port to plug in your headset, which allows you to listen and check your audio. The Yeti X has four condenser mic capsules compared to the Yeti’s three.

Settings on the Blue Yeti X

The volume dial on the front uses LEDs to indicate the levels for gain and headphone volume, and whether the mic is muted. To change the gain level, click and hold the dial for 2 seconds and then rotate left or right to lower or raise the gain. Click and hold the dial button again for 2 seconds to change the headphone level. When you do it a third time, you’ll get to adjust the blend, which will adjust whether you’ll hear more of the computer audio or the microphone audio through the headphones. One of the coolest features is the LED metering, which uses the same LEDs as the previously mentioned levels. To see the metering, simply talk to the Yeti X, and the microphone will pick up the voice, letting you know if the audio is peaking. Additionally, the LED lighting can be changed to match your desktop or room setup.

Four Pickup Patterns

Like the Yeti, the Yeti X features four-capsule condenser array, giving users options of four different pickup patterns (cardioid, omni, bi-directional, stereo). Cardioid is the popular choice for podcasters and streamers since it focuses on the person in front of the mic. Omnidirectional is perfect for those at a live venue who wants to capture all the ambient sounds. Bi-directional is used for two people talking, with one person in front and one behind the mic. Stereo uses the left and right channels to make the sound more immersive.

Blue VO!CE

Yeti X Blue Voice Settings

Blue VO!CE instantly became our favorite new feature because we’re able to customize and improve the audio on the fly. This is perfect for creators streaming live since they can remove background noise and boost the bass and treble. To get this feature started, you’ll need to download the Logitech G Hub software. It will connect automatically, and it comes with many different presets under Blue VO!CE that makes the sound outstanding. These include broadcaster, FM Station, AM Station, Low Voice, High Voice, Crisp & Modern, and Warm & Vintage.

Another feature that’s great for musicians and podcasters is the multi-mic setup. You can use more than one Yeti X mics to capture different instruments like a guitar, bass guitar, and drums. With podcasting, you can have guests talk into their own Yeti X instead of sharing just one.

Audio Quality

Yeti is known for capturing excellent sound, and the Yeti X delivers on that with 24-bit/48kHz recordings. To get the clearest audio, set the gain level closer to 0 as possible. The voice will come out crisp with background noise at a minimum. Of course, it’s always smart to soundproof your room as well. Depending on the program, you can save the audio in different formats like WAV or mp3. The compatible programs include Audacity, GarageBand, SoundCloud, iMovie, Ableton Live, Skype.

The Yeti X comes with a stand, but if you want to connect it to a mount or boom arm, you can with the 3/4 threading located on the bottom.
