Ewan McGregor may return as Obi-Wan Kenobi, but on Disney+

Lucasfilm had plans to produce a few standalone Star Wars films, but after the disappointing box office numbers for Solo: A Star Wars Story, the studio shifted gears. There were rumors of an Obi-Wan Kenobi and Boba Fett films, but for now, it’s focusing on finishing the Skywalker saga with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and going ahead with projects by Rian Johnson and Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Now it’s being reported that Ewan McGregor is in talks to reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in a Disney+ series.

Disney+ is already planning on a live-action Star Wars series titled The Mandalorian. It stars Pedro Pascal and is spearheaded by Jon Favreau (Iron Man, The Lion King). As for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, not much is known yet other than it’s reported that Disney is putting a lot of money into it.

McGregor played the Jedi Master in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, and he was easily one of the best things about the films. Before the prequels, Alec Guinness played the older Jedi in the original Star Wars trilogy.

Disney has planning big things for its films and small-screen series, and D23 Expo 2019 is an indicator of that. Previous D23 Expos had separate panels for its animated and live-action films. This year, it’s clumping them together for its panel focused on movies on Saturday, August 24th. There will be a panel dedicated to just Disney+ on Friday, August 23rd. Perhaps McGregor will be making a surprise appearance on stage.

Disney+ and Lucasfilm also have plans for another Star Wars series starring Diego Luna. It follows the Rebel spy, Cassian Andor, before the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Production is expected to begin this year.
