Meet the new Ariel from Disney’s The Little Mermaid remake: Halle Bailey

Walt Disney Studios has announced who’s going to play Ariel in the upcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. Meet Halle Bailey. Many might know her from Chloe x Halle, an R&B duo consisting of sisters Chloe and Halle Bailey.

The film is directed by Rob Marshall and produced by Marshall, John DeLuca, Marc Platt and Lin-Manuel Miranda. It will feature classic songs from the animated film by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman. Menken will be composing new songs for the upcoming film with Miranda working on lyrics.

“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” says Marshall.

The Little Mermaid will begin principal photography in early 2020. Disney is planning to make more announcements in the coming weeks, and we may be seeing big news during D23 Expo in August.
