OGIO Alpha Convoy 525R Backpack (review)

These days most people like to try and stay busy. Whether it’s with school, work, or travel, we try to keep ourselves occupied with some type of activity. As we stay in a constant state of motion, we want to make sure that wherever we go, we have all our essentials with us. Having a backpack that can carry everything you need is a must, as it makes traveling quick and easy. But with the wide variety that’s available on today’s market, finding the right one can be challenging. For the last few weeks, I’ve been using the OGIO Alpha Convoy 525R Backpack to see if it’s the backpack perfect for those who like to keep busy.

Design

The 525R is a roll-top backpack, which means that you have a quick and easy way to expand the bag to fit everything that you’ll need to take with you. To keep things secure, the roll-top will come with two side clips and one top clip ensuring that nothing will slip out of your bag. Now one concern that most people will have with roll-top backpacks is that accessing your items inside the main compartment won’t be quick and easy. Fortunately, the 525R has a side zipper included that will give you that quick ease of access if you need to grab something from the backpack in a timely manner, such as a jacket or maybe camera.

On both sides of the bag, you’ll get two large pockets for any water bottles. Along with the main compartment, the 525R comes with a large stash pocket and a smaller front zippered pocket that perfect for carrying any personal items or other smaller valuables. There is also a dedicated pocket for a 15” laptop with a separate tablet sleeve. This pocket is designed with a protective waterproof zipper to make sure that even in the heaviest rain, your laptop stays nice and dry. Inside the main compartment, you’ll also find a large zippered mesh pocket that will let you easily organize any items that you store inside.

The backpack uses premium 600D Cordura material for the body and 1200D Cordura for the bottom. The Cordura material makes the 525R extremely durable and resistant to any tears or abrasions. Rounding out the design of the backpack are premium YKK zippers and buckles, reflective trims to better visibility at night, a luggage pass-through, and side and bottom compression straps.

Performance

For the last few weeks, I used the 525R as my primary gym bag. Its size was perfect to carry everything I needed before heading to the gym. That included an extra set of clothes, running shoes, a water bottle, a towel, and a pair of headphones. The large zipper pocket inside the main compartment was a perfect way to separate my shoes and my clothes. While the smaller front pocket was a great way to store my wallet, keys, and my combination lock for the gym lockers. While at the gym, the quick side access made it possible for me to easily grab what I needed before heading down to do a quick workout.

Usually, I use one of my dedicated camera bags for any photo walks that I go on, but I wanted to see how the 525R would handle on that type of activity. Luckily, when I do go on any photo walks, I don’t take a lot of camera gear with me. So the bag was perfect enough to carry my mirrorless camera with my go-to lens and a few accessories, such as extra batteries and memory cards. I really liked the side access giving me the ability to pull out my camera for the moments I wanted to snap a picture, and then store it away at those times I wouldn’t’ need it. I also enjoyed the fact that I was able to bring my laptop and an external hard drive, so I can transfer my photos at any time I wanted. The backpack straps did a great job of dispersing the weight evenly across my shoulders so that after even a few hours, I didn’t suffer from any strain within my shoulders or upper back.

Final Reaction

When it comes to any type of traveling, whether it’s overseas or just within your own city, convenience is key. The 525R gives you a lot of convenience with its ability to carry all of your traveling essentials and having the ability to access them with two different points. Either through the roll-top or the zipper side access. I like to think of the 525R as a swiss army knife, due to the fact that you can use it in a multitude of ways. It’s a perfect backpack for work or school use since you’ll be able to carry not only a laptop up to 15-inches but also a tablet. And if you’re traveling there’s even a luggage pass through to make navigating through the airport much easier. It’s not every day that you come across a backpack that can basically handle everything you need, but OGIO made sure that when you do, the ALPHA 525R is ready for you.

Score: 5/5 Atoms
