Godzilla: King of the Monsters #1 at box office but falls short of expectations

Godzilla: King of the Monsters

Godzilla: King of the Monsters is the latest Godzilla film that features the giant kaiju going up against his deadliest foe yet, King Ghidorah. Other classic Toho Monsters are featured including Mothra and Rodan. The film has been getting negative reviews from critics, but audiences are enjoying the film with a CinemaScore of B+. We absolutely loved the movie since it’s the movie that Godzilla fans deserve. (Read our review here.) With the movie now in theaters and the weekend over, Godzilla: King of the Monsters was able to reign supreme at the box office with $49 million. However, the numbers are slightly disappointing since Warner Bros. was expecting it to make $50-55 million.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters was released alongside Rocketman and Ma. Rocketman was able to pull in $25 million and Ma with $18.2 million. With Aladdin still going on strong and the release of Rocketman and Ma, that may have contributed to the lower numbers for the Godzilla sequel. This weekend is the theatrical release of Fox’s last X-Men film, Dark Phoenix, so we’ll have to wait and see if that’s going to have an effect on the MonsterVerse film.

The 2014 Godzilla film by Gareth Edwards was able to $93.2 million during its opening weekend, and the other MonsterVerse film, Kong: Skull Island, was able to make $61 million. 2014’s Godzilla didn’t have much competition since the week before saw the release of Neighbors. A week after its release, it saw competition with X-Men: Days of Future Past. In the end, it was able to gross $529 million worldwide. Kong: Skull Island was released a week after Logan and a week before Beauty and the Beast, but it was able to make $566 million worldwide at the box office.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters has a production budget of $170 million, which is $10 million more than 2014’s Godzilla. To break even, it’s estimated that it will need to make $340 million. Let’s hope it makes a lot more than that when its theatrical run is over if you’re a fan of Godzilla. The good news is that Godzilla vs. Kong is still happening, and it will be released in theaters on March 13, 2020.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters Synopsis: The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.

The film is directed and written by Michael Dougherty (Krampus) with Zach Shields as the co-screenwriter. It stars Kyle Chandler (Super 8), Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring), Millie Bobby Brown (Netflix’s Stranger Things), Bradley Whiteford (Get Out), Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water), Charles Dance (HBO’s Game of Thrones), Thomas Middleditch (HBO’s Silicon Valley), Aisha Hinds (Star Trek Into Darkness), O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Straight Outta Compton), David Strathairn (Godzilla), Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai, Batman Begins), and Ziyi Zhang (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon).
