Avengers: Endgame 4DX is a wild ride that will engage your senses

Avengers: Endgame

Avengers: Endgame has been in theaters for a week now, and it has broken all kinds of box office records including the first film to reach $1 billion worldwide during its opening week. It’s going to reach $2 billion soon, and it’s tracking to beat out Avengers: Infinity War, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Titanic to become the second-highest grossing film of all time worldwide. (Let’s see if it can take down Avatar.) Now that a lot of fans have had the chance to see Avengers: Endgame, it’s time to take things to the next level with 4DX.

4DX is an immersive technology for theatrical experiences that uses motion seats and environmental special effects to simulate the action like flying in space, seeing lightning, smoke, water, and more. The CJ 4DPLEX team had the opportunity to work on Avengers: Endgame in 4DX for over a year with Disney and the filmmakers, making it the longest time it has worked on a 4DX film project.

4DX is available nationwide, and we had the chance to check out the 4DX version of Avengers: Endgame at Edwards Mira Mesa near downtown San Diego. The 4DX theater is completely new and smells like a new car, and the seats are upgraded along with the special effects.

Spoilers Ahead for Avengers: Endgame

The surviving Avengers have a plan to take out Thanos, and they have discovered the location of the Mad Titan. Since the villain is somewhere on another planet, the team will have to fly out of Earth in a spaceship. This scene is one of the highlights for 4DX because you will feel like you’re in a spaceship with the crew. The motion seats give you the feeling of traveling at high speeds, and once the ship reaches its destination, the seats mimic the sudden stop. (This very much reminded me of Star Tours at Disneyland.)

The seats also have options of turning off the water effects. I figured I’d be okay with this since I want the full immersion. However, it turns out that since I wear glasses, the pair would get wet. If you don’t have any issues with some light water effects, be prepared for a few wet moments since the film does feature water here and there.

The climactic battle with the Avengers going up against Thanos and his army is the crème de la crème in 4DX. The seats will move be moving due to the intense action and the environmental effects will kick into high gear with Thor’s lightning powers and Iron Man’s blasts. It’s a lot to take in, but if you’re just enjoying the ride, a lot of your senses will be utilized. There’s even a moment where I felt like I was being attacked when Thanos was beating up Thor, Captain America and Iron Man. That’s not to say you’ll get injured, but you will feel a slight push on your back.

We watched the film with a packed audience, and it seemed like it’s the first time the audience has experienced a film in 4DX. The audiences were ecstatic, and you can hear the room’s excitement when the action was taking over.

My suggestion for 4DX is to experience it after watching the film at a regular theater. The reason is that the motion seats and special effects can be distracting if you’re trying to follow the story, but once you’ve gotten that out of the way, you’re in for a treat. We have experienced a lot of films in 4DX, and CJ 4DPLEX has raised the bar in immersive 4D entertainment. Avengers: Endgame in 4DX is a wild ride that will engage your physical and visual senses.
