Netflix working on Resident Evil series

The Resident Evil 2 Remake is coming out this Friday, and it’s already receiving very high scores for video game sites. Now we have reports coming in that Netflix is working on bringing its own Resident Evil universe via its the streaming service. It’s reportedly going to be a Netflix global original with Constantin Film behind the scenes, the company responsible for producing the Resident Evil films.

According to Deadline, Constantin is looking for a showrunner to help bring the world to life in the television department. It’s also looking to explore other areas of the Resident Evil universe while still focusing on the evil Umbrella Corporation, the company responsible for the zombie outbreak that ruined Raccoon City. It’s expected to include Resident Evil features like action sequences and Easter eggs. Does that mean we’ll see more of the protagonist doing slo-mo jump kicks to mutant dogs? Let’s hope not.

The Resident Evil series is based on the video game survival horror franchise that started in 2002. It has spawned six live-action films with Paul W.S. Anderson as the director.

I do hope that Constantin can pull off a scary live-action series that captures games like Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 7. But with the report saying that it will have Resident Evil elements like action sequences, I believe it will be more in line with the live-action films with action scenes straight out of The Matrix films. Even the CG-animated films from Japan have been known to features superhuman feats of gunplay and acrobatics as if the protagonists have studied Gun Kata under Christian Bale’s character in Equilibrium.

What made the Resident Evil games so scary for me is the scarce weapons and ammo and the looming atmosphere. There was a sense of dread, and the main characters’ future felt bleak. Resident Evil 7 was a return to form that focused more on the scary atmosphere and less on being an action hero.
