First look at Aladdin, Genie, Jasmine, Abu, Jafar in live-action movie

When creating a live-action version of an animated classic, you can be sure that fans will be extra critical about how things will look. Take, for example, the upcoming live-action Aladdin film. The new cover of Entertainment Weekly featured our first look at the characters including Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Naomi Scott as Jasmine and Will Smith as Genie. It has raised many eyebrows, especially with Will Smith not being blue. (The actor does say that he will be CGI and blue in the film.) In addition, many photos featuring Aladdin, Jasmine and Genie have been released along with ones where we get the first look at Abu and Jafar.

Let’s take a look at the cover below:

Fans were not happy about the cover:

One even went as far as saying it’s blinding:

And one shared an animated gif of Homer blinding himself with bleach:

To calm the fans down, Will Smith has said that Genie will indeed be blue and CGI in most of the film. The cover and photos feature his human/disguise form.

As for the Genie’s personality, Smith tells Entertainment Weekly that he’ll pay respects to the character while adding his own flavor.

“Whenever you’re doing things that are iconic, it’s always terrifying,” said Smith. “The question is always: Where was there meat left on the bone? Robin didn’t leave a lot of meat on the bone with the character.”

“I started to feel confident that I could deliver something that was an homage to Robin Williams but was musically different,” he continued. “Just the flavor of the character would be different enough and unique enough that it would be in a different lane, versus trying to compete.”

“I think it’ll stand out as unique even in the Disney world,” said Smith. “There hasn’t been a lot of that hip-hop flavor in Disney history.”

The next thing is the different outfit for Aladdin. He’s known for his tiny vest that covers his chest and MC Hammer-style pants. As you can see below, he still has a red vest, but it has a normal length, and he’s wearing a striped shirt that covers his abs and chest. We’re guessing the filmmakers wanted to ground him and make him fit in their world of Agrabah.

Next up we have Abu, and he’s sporting a vest without a shirt. His outfit is closer to the animated Aladdin than the live-action counterpart. It looks like they’ll recapture the moment when Abu is about to touch the forbidden treasure, causing the Cave of Wonders to collapse and trap him and Aladdin inside.

Jafar definitely looks younger thanks to actor Marwan Kenzari playing the role. The outfit definitely screams Jafar including the big headpiece and pointy shoulder pads.

Above we see Naomi Scoot as Jasmine and Nasim Pedrad as Dalia, Jasmine’s best friend.

Above we see Aladdin and Jasmine on the run, which captures the moment in the film where they escape from the guards.

Aladdin hits theaters on May 24, 2019.
