After 10 seasons in the NBA, Houston Rockets shooting guard James Harden has proved that he’s a perennial all-star. This past season alone, Harden has set historic NBA records and also led his team to the Western Conference Finals. But with the NBA season over and his eyes focused on the upcoming season, Harden took some time out to pay homage to where his love of the game began, Audubon Middle School.

On Sunday, June 25th, James Harden in partnership with Adidas Basketball celebrated the start of his career by hosting a block party at his former middle school. This brought out hundreds of adults and children to come and play basketball, eat some food, and see James Harden himself. The block party was called “Imma Be A Star,” which was a note that James had wrote to his mother when he was a kid, and she had saved that note ever since.

James Harden made a grand appearance at the event. He rode out to the thunderous shouts of screams of all his fans as they watched him roll in atop a fire truck wrapped in a picture of his face and his signage. James Harden took to the stage accompanied by his mother and general manager of Adidas basketball Kris Aman. While on stage James Harden and Kris Aman made a special announcement in which they wanted to show their appreciation for Audubon. On top of already repairing the outside basketball courts, they will also be repairing and remodeling the school’s gymnasium which will be ready for the new school year. This was a very personal project for Harden, as he felt that at this point of his career he’s in “a really good place” and it was time to give back to the community and put an impact on today’s kids.

The contributions to the school weren’t the only surprise that was made on stage. James’ mother Monja Willis also had a surprise in store, but it wasn’t for the kids; it was for her son. Collaborating with Monja, Adidas curated a special commercial that they made for James, which showcased his entire career from the courts of Audubon to his days at Arizona State University and ultimately him being drafted in the NBA, all while narrated by Monja who shows her love and appreciation and continued support for her son.

Harden wasn’t the only celebrity athlete that appeared at the event. NBA Rookie Of The Year nominee Donovan Mitchell (Utah Jazz) was also in attendance, and musical performances were provided by Famous Dex and Rick Ross.

This was the very first time that James Harden had ever participated in an event like this, and as one of Adidas basketball’s leading sponsored athletes, it was great to see both of them coming together to shed some positive aspects in today’s youth, by providing something that can truly make an impact on their lives for years to come. With the entire Block Party revolving around the note that James had written to his mother all those years to go, it was a great example to the children that wishful thinking combined with hard work and persistence can lead to greater things.

James Harden can be seen next at the NBA awards as he is a candidate for this years NBA MVP award.
